Description

Mount Somers Station is seeking a motivated and reliable Calf Rearer to join our team for the upcoming calf rearing season. We rear approximately 900 calves annually under a strict no bobby calf policy, through automatic calf feeders. Key Responsibilities - Registering and training calves onto the JFC auto calf feeders - Monitoring calf feeding allocations and feeding behaviour through the feeder system - Identifying calves not consuming their full milk allocation - Marking and monitoring calves requiring extra attention - Identifying, treating, and recording animal health issues under guidance - Daily cleaning and disinfecting of calf sheds and feeders - Monitoring feeder hygiene and ensuring the auto wash systems are functioning correctly - Maintaining high standards of calf welfare, cleanliness, and animal health About the Role - Experience preferred, but attitude and willingness to learn are highly valued - Flexible roster options available, August-September/October - Hourly rate negotiable based on experience - Drive-in option or shared accommodation available - 900 Calves reared, consisting of 250–300 replacement heifers, with the remaining Charolais-cross calves reared for beef production. We are looking for someone who enjoys working with stock, takes pride in animal care, and is keen to be involved in progressive calf rearing systems within a supportive farming team. This is an exciting opportunity to work with modern calf rearing technology in purpose-built calf sheds using the JFC automatic calf feeder system. The system allows calves to be managed individually through programmed feed curves and multiple feeding periods throughout the day. Each calves EID tag which is read by the machine upon entry to the feeder. The system then mixes milk powder and water, heats it to temperature, and delivers the exact milk allocation specific to that calf.
